SUMMARY:42 mile Millersburg Ferry
DESCRIPTION:Want to pedal a 42 mile loop that includes an almost 1 mile ferry ride across the Susquehanna River near the end? I’m riding the “Millersburg Ferry Route” on Monday morning\, July 4th starting at 8:00 am and would welcome you to join along. Ride departs and returns to MYO Park in Millersburg. Ferry fare is $5.00 cash and includes you and your bike. I want to stress\, it’s CASH fare only! \nRestroom stop\, if needed\, at the Sheetz south of Halifax (just short of 8 mile mark) and a planned 10 minute mid-ride break at the Weis Market in Newport (just over 27 mile mark). Pace will be targeted for 12.5-13.0 average\, little slower on climbs\, bit faster on descents. Depending on the turnout and abilities\, a faster group may go off the front and a slower group forming in the back. \nAbout 2\,500’ of elevation gain over the entire ride with 4 notable climbs. First happens going through Halifax; length is just over a mile an averages a 4% grade with just under 200’ gained. Next is the northeast corner of Duncannon\, climbing Newport Rd (Rt 849) and also around a mile in length\, gaining 275’ with an average grade of 4.1%. Longest climb is just under 6 miles (Mahanoy Valley Rd & Newport Rd)\, gaining around 700′ over that distance. Doing the math\, that comes out at about a 1.4% grade and the reason is it’s not a constant\, sustained climb. Some gain is given back on short descents and false flats. Reaching the summit of this climb is also the highest point of the entire ride and yields to a nice stretch of downhill into Newport. Last climb starts upon the right turn onto Owl Hollow Rd off of Juniata Parkway. This one is about 1.3 miles in length\, gains about 250′ and offers an average 3.2% grade.
